What does the award mean to me?

As students, there are plenty of sacrifices we make, and most of the time, they have to do with putting education first. When we tirelessly work and strive to thrive, burning the midnight oil and expecting to reap all that WE sow.

Furthermore, as an international student of African descent, I made difficult decisions looking for the best education and a future. Reflecting on the time that I received this award, I didn’t imagine that there would be an avenue designed to recognize my efforts. But, to my surprise, I learned that this award existed. I was honoured to have been chosen and delighted to know that other students like me will follow in my footsteps receiving this award.

This award encourages me in the unexplainable feeling that when you genuinely put effort towards hard goals that you set for yourself, you can be validated. This award has taught me the importance of not eliminating myself when it comes to looking for opportunities and soaring even higher. This award has shown me the power of generosity and gratitude.

The Epale Family Memorial award meant a lot to me as a person, it impacted me in 3 different ways: recognition, value to the community and also service. Being an inaugural recipient of this award has made me feel seen and heard. I feel that I have been recognized for the work I’ve done to represent students and impact my community.

The award deeply impacts the African and Caribbean students here at CBU. It has sent a message highlighting that resilience, hard work and also determination are valued and recognized.

I encourage other African and Caribbean students on Campus to serve and give back in the best way possible. I advise them serve with the intention of helping others instead of being recognized or celebrated.

Serve so that we can make the city, province, and country that we find ourselves in a better place. Serve so that you can live a legacy that would impact  those who follow in your footsteps. Serve so that the world can be better than we all met it.
